Shanghai postcard #10

A large sewer line project literally tore through Jiashan Market last week.

The thing that amazed me about this project was the amount of human effort that went into it. The only electricity for this project came from a single diesel generator, which powered a concrete saw and a jack-hammer.

The rest of the (back-breaking) work was done by hand with picks, shovels, and massive sledgehammers with long, flexible handles for breaking up concrete and masonry.

Somebody give these guys a raise!
