Sew Box Bags! is a video-based class for intermediate sewists. If you can use an iron, cut accurately, sew a straight line, and wrangle a few fiddly corners, you can make this bag!
Beware – making box bags is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE and there are fantastic benefits to becoming a box bag sewist.
Benefit #1: It’s gross but true: box bags have saved me from a lap full of vomit on multiple occasions. When my kids get that green-around-the-gills look in the back of the car, I am ready with a barf bag immediately. Why? I can find one in seconds flat – because it’s in my box bag purse organizer.
Benefit #2: Box bags can make you a more productive knitter and crafter. My handwork projects come out into the world with me every day because they’re protected, AND my stuff is protected from knitting needles poking out in odd places. I never worry about losing my pattern or tin of stitch markers because everything is safely zipped into the bag. And when life hands me a random ten minutes of waiting time, I am ready to knit. Those minutes add up.
Benefit #3: You can color-coordinate your bags to your projects. It’s matchy-matchy heaven for the control enthusiast.
Benefit #4: Box bags can set you up for nearly effortless gift-giving that’s next level. The bags themselves are fantastic gifts, and you can stuff them with all sorts of thoughtful goodies. From self-care kits for friends with the flu to instant meal kits to art packs to travel kits, you can turn a bag into a one-of-a-kind handmade gift pack in seconds flat.
Benefit #5: Destash your fabric AND get a great finished object. You can use nearly any fabric to make a box bag, and even the weirdest prints make brilliant linings. I used a cow print (no joke, a fabric with giant dark splotches supposed to look like the outside of a cow) to line a bag and it was adorable.
In this class, you will watch me make a box bag from start to finish, including one epic (and, I hope, amusing) mistake. You’ll get to see all the nitty-gritty steps that are frequently glossed over in written instructions. This takes the guesswork out of the process so you can sail through the sewing to box bag glory.
These bags are, quite frankly, not intuitive – this is part of what makes them so amazing. Nobody will know how you did it! They will think making it took way longer than it actually did. And that you work sewing magic, because you do.
I have made dozens of box bags, and my early efforts involved lots of mistakes. In this class, you can not only get the benefit of avoiding my mishaps, but you’ll also see how I’ve streamlined my process to make the bags efficiently and right the first time.
The class includes four videos, an instruction reference sheet including time stamps in each video where each step is shown and a cutting guide so you can use one of my tried-and-true size recipes or design your own custom size.
